Cross-bedding in sandstone

Cross-bedding in sandstone. This type of bedding occurs of deposits formed by wind-blown sand dunes. Area in photo is about 10 inches wide. These features, part of the Wingate Formation, were created during the late Triassic period, about 200 million years ago. During that time, much of the area that is now part the American Southwest was a vast Sahara-like desert, covered by huge dunes. Capitol Reef National Park. Wayne Co., Utah.
